While many may have begun to feel a bit of relief with the release of COVID-19 vaccines, the world has become shaken by the emergence of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant called B.1.1.7. Researchers in Britain have been tracking the genome of the virus, however, surveillance covers only their population. With this new variant likely spreading, resources and funding must be directed towards a national surveillance program allowing for genomic data to more rapidly support mitigation efforts and reduce the spread of new strains.
